Civil War Nonparticipants and Non-Moultrie Participants

../../Images/Moultrie.gif

The men listed on this page have been connected with Moultrie County in some way in one or more publications, but are not believed to have had a Moultrie Civil War connection for one of the following reasons:
For some soldiers, we have portraits or grave photographs.

Note: the following codes identify sources:

LovRep
Lovington Reporter article of June 5, 1903, listing veteran burials in Lovington Township. (In this compilation, I give this source great credence, as it was written when these men were still remembered by the living.)
MCHGS
Moultrie Country Historical and Genealogical Society.  In this list, this refers to the cemetery transcriptions published by this group.
POR
List of Pensioners on the Roll
1891PBR
Portrait and Biographical Record of Shelby and Moultrie Counties, 1891
RoH
Roll of Honor, published by the State of Illinois in 1929. This is available at the Illinois State Archives as well as in a corrected version here.
TWM
This was Marrowbone, a pamphlet from 1889.
OSY
Our Seventieth year.  A publication of the American Legion, Moultrie County Post No. 68, Sullivan Illinois.  Among other information, this book lists veteran burials for each war by cemetery.

Last name First name Alternate spelling Recruited from Rank Co. Regiment Record Death Cemetery Comment

Private I 113th Ill. Inf.
1864_ Marrowbone From OSY. MCHGS does not corroborate, nor can military record be found.
Alexander Hayden Haydon Lovington Private A 126th Ill. Inf.
1863_02_21 Pea From the 1929 Roll of Honor. Almost certainly a duplicate of Thomas H. (Haydon) Alexander. No military or other records can be found under this name.
Ashmore John H.
Oakland County, Illinois Private B 21st Ill. Inf. Enlisted as a Private on 22 June 1861. Enlisted in Company B, 21st Infantry Regiment Illinois on 28 June 1861. Killed Company B, 21st Infantry Regiment Illinois on 31 December 1862 in Stones River, TN. 1862_12_31
A hero, but not from Moultrie.
Baggett E.C.
Sullivan Private C 126th Ill. Inf.
1864_05_21 Greenhill Probably a duplicate of Abraham C. Baggett. This date fits his record.
Baker Arthur

1928_12_27 Greenhill From OSY. Birth in 1878 precludes service.
Ball Robert S.

Ill.Inf.
1882_04_17 Smyser From OSY. No military record can be found.
Batson John

Private H 2nd Ill.Inf.

Waggoner From OSY. There was no 2nd Ill. Infantry. Probably an incorrect duplicate of John W. Batson, of the 7th Cavalry.
Bennett James

1872_05_07 Kellar From OSY. He died at age 56v 10m 27d, which would make him somewhat old for service. No military record has been found, and he is not listed in the 1903 article. This strongly suggests that he was not a veteran.
Bicknell Julius

1905_10_05 Hewitt Date from obituary. No military record yet found, and no mention of it was made in his obit. Title 'Rev.' provided by 9/30/02 newspaper.
Billman Elliott

No Civil War record found, though WWI draft registration exists. Elected to school board in 1928, and so must be of a later generation.
Blackford James Rufus

Tabor/Allenville From OSY. Possibly a duplicate of James Blackford in Daugherty Cemetery.
Boggett A.C.

Greenhill From OSY. Probably a duplicate of E.C. Baggett
Boling George B

Greenhill From RoH. If correct, probably of the 126th or 148th Ohio (A man of the same name of Co. B, 6th Volunteer KY Cavalry ended up in Arkansas). However, not listed by MCHGS, and the only George Boling found in Moultrie census records was born about 1892.
Bolton Charles H.

G 9th Ky. Cav
1878_
Widow Phoebe Bolton was listed in PoR. However, Charles apparently died in KY, and Phoebe was living with daughter Mary E. and son-in-law William R. Haley in Macoupin Co. in the 1880 census.
Boultinghouse Eugene

Private
Ky. Reg.
1903_11_24 Marrowbone From OSY. Died at age 22y 5m 20d, and so is not a Civil War vet. Possibly a Spanish-American War vet.

Bright Henry O.

1885_03_23 Kellar From OSY. Died aged 2m 14d, precluding service.
Bryant William W.
Paradise, IL Private D 123rd Ill. Infantry Enlisted as a Private on 09 August 1862. Joined Company D, 123rd Infantry Regiment Illinois on 06 September 1862. Died on 05 March 1863 in Nashville, TN. 1863_03_05 Nashville National Cemetery Buried at section E, site 1198, Nashivlle National Cemtery. Widow Elizabeth listed in PoR. However she moved to Moultrie after the war.
Buxton Andrew Jackson

1924_11_15 Greenhill From OSY, which shows that he served as a Private in the 2nd Va. No military record has been found, and as he came from PA, service in Virginia seems unlikely.
Cheever George W.

1870_12_21 Whitfield From OSY. No military record has yet been found. Though participation is possible, he may have been listed because of confusion with George E Cheever, a Private serving much later, buried in Waggoner Cemetery.
Cloud

Widow Nancy was listed in PoR: Dalton City. Though her husband has not yet been identified, she lived in Macon County.
Cochran A.W. Cochram

1900_07_02 Hewitt From OSY. Both LovRep and RoH mention the Alexander Cochran, also buried here, that served in the War of 1812, but not A.W. Cochran. In addition no military record can be found.
Cook

Widow Mary was listed in PoR. Her husband has not been positively identified, but her known age (born about 1809) suggests that her husband probably was a veteran of an earlier conflict.
Cundiff Ralph

1928_02_27
From RoH. Military record not found. May be WWI.
Daum Raymond J.

1926_01_06 Greenhill From OSY. Not in MCHGS list. No military record found.
Dawdy Simon

Wright From RoH. A Simon T. Dawdy married Elizabeth Craddick on 20 Apr 1860 in Shelby Co. This is probably the same person, but no military record has yet been found.
Dyke Henry

Kellar From RoH. No military record found; not in the MCHGS cemetery readings.
Elllington James D.

1910_10_14 Smyser Identified as Confederate by OSY; not listed in RoH. James D. Ellington was born in VA, and lived there until after the war (son George was born there in 1865). He had moved to Mattoon Twp, Coles Co. by 1870. No Military record has yet been found.
Englad R D England?

A 73rd Ill.Inf.

Gammill Lawrence W.

George Aaron

Greenhill From OSY. An Aaron George from Washington, IL served in the 111th Ill. Inf., and was killed on 22 July 1864. The Aaron George from Sullivan, for whom no military record is found, was still living there in the 1870 and 1880 censuses.
Gibbon Fred R.

Hart Daniel S

D 123rd Ill. Infantry

Listed in PoR: Gays Post Office. Lived in Shelby County.
Hewitt R.N.

Hewitt Listed in LovRep, but military record not yet found. MCHGS does not list. The LovRep article lists three Hewitts buried here: John, R.N., and William; it does not list Arnolphus, a known veteran buried in Hewitt. It is likely that 'R.N.' (perhaps mistranscribed) and Arnolphus M. are the same person.
Hill C. J.

A 139th Oh. Inf.

Greenhill From RoH. Almost certainly a duplicate (with incorrect service record) of Thomas J. Hill. No Hill served in Co. A 139th Ohio.
Hopkins Alexander

Maxedon John Maxidon Mattoon Private H 123rd Ill.Inf.
1878_05_02 Smyser From RoH. However, pension records show that widow Barbara filed for a pension on 14 May 1889, over ten years after the death of the John Maxedon buried in Smyser Cemetery. Therefore the persion buried here is probably not the same John Maxedon who served in the 123rd.
Mayfield William C.

C 80th In. Inf.
1906_ Pleasantville From RoH. However, there is no Pleasantville Cemetery in Moultrie, and no other records have been found that show a Moultrie connection.
McGown James

H 145th Ill.Inf.

Greenhill From RoH. MCHGS does not list in Greenhill, and no military record has yet been found. May be a duplicate of James McKeowen of the 126th.

McKinney Caleb R

McNeal Andrew J.

Private F 53rd Oh. Inf.

Widow Polly listed in PoR, but she moved to Illinois after his death in the war.
Miller Henry
Sullivan

143rd Ill. Inf.

Military record not found, though, on the basis of name similarity and regiment, may be a duplicate of Henry Minor. If not, the best fit for Henry Miller is: Born IL c. 1833; wife Eliza, born c. IL c. 1838. May have died by 1870: Eliza living with Fielding/Maria Purvis (parents?) and daughter Mary living next door with (BIL?) Salathiel Miller.

Listed in PoR: Dalton City Post Office. Census records show that he lived in Macon Co.

Newlan Jacob

1906_05_07 Kellar From OSY. No military record found.
Osborn George W. Osborne
Private A 54th Oh. Inf.

No George W. Osborn/Osborne found in Ohio rosters. Probably William Osborne of the 54th Illinois.
Patrick Ernest F.

Turner From OSY, but not found by MCHGS. No military record found.
Pepperdine William H.

1926_ Kellar From OSY. Only one William Pepperdine served in the Civil War, in the 101st Ill. Inf. Widow Priscilla A. filed for a pension 1 May 1868. This cannot be the same person, as the William Pepperdine buried in Kellar died in 1926, surviving wife Nancy by six years.
Phelps Amos G
Sullivan County, IN Private D 38th Ill. Inf. Died 22 Nov 1862 at Bowling Green KY of disease

Widow Darita filed for pension 2 Apr 1864(?) in Illinois. Incorrectly asigmed to Moultrie because of confusion over county name. OSY???

Widow Caroline was listed by PoR as living in Bethany. She apparently moved there after she was widowed, as they lived in Shelby Co. prior to the war.
Roland Charles
Chicago

13th Ill. Cav

Kellar From OSY, though he does not appear in the MCHGS trascription. 1890 NV Soldiers List shows him living in Elko Co, NV, where he rose to prominence in the GAR leadership. Filed for pension 24 Sep xxxx (year unclear, though probably 19xx) in NV. No subsequent widow's pension. Because he was recruited in Chicago and apparently died in Nevada, a Moultrie connection is unlikely.

Ross Edgar

Kellar From OSY. MCHGS does not list. Possibly a duplicate of Orgin Ross
