HARRIS, George W.
The community was greatly shocked shortly after the noon hour Monday (September 10, 1945) when it learned of the sudden
and unexpected death of George W. Harris. He had been working in the morning and had made a few
stops, as was his custom, on his way home to dinner. He had not complained of feeling ill to
his friends but on arriving at home said he had heart-burn. He felt nauseated and did not care
for the dinner and quietly passed away a few minutes later.
The deceased was born near here on September 13, 1873, the son of Joseph T. and Sarah (Jones) Harris,
and had lived in this community all his life. He graduated from Lovington high school with the class
of 1895. He was married to Miss Lela Foster in September 1901. To this union were born two sons,
Joseph Foster Harris of Dearborn, Mich. and Sgt. Harold Dean Harris of Springfield, Mo. The latter
is with the Armed Forces and is stationed at Camp Maxey, Texas. He is also survived by two sisters,
Miss Lida Harris of Sullivan and Mrs. E.C. Kellar of Covina, Calif., and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at the McMullin Funeral Home in Lovington, Wednesday afternoon at 4:00 o'clock.
Rev. James White, pastor of the Methodist church, of which he had been a faithful member for many years,
had charge. Rev. H.R. Halfyard of Chatsworth gave the prayer and Rev. H.C. Munch of Macon, a lifelong
friend of the deceased, gave a few remarks. The pallbearers were: N.W. Boggs, J.S. Strohm, R.E. Bowers,
T.L. Conn, H.L. Stillens and C.C. Dickson. Interment was in the Hewitt Cemetery.
Mr. Harris will be greatly missed at church as he was regular in attendance and always sang in the choir.
He had taught school earlier in life and then had farmed for a number of years but for several years,
after moving into town, had been a painter. He was a splendid cook and enjoyed sharing his culinary
efforts with his neighbors. He was very friendly to all and will be greatly missed in this community.
