McDANIEL, Andrew Mike

Funeral services for Andrew Mike McDaniel, 76, of Bruce, were held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the McMullin Funeral Home in Sullivan. Burial was in the French Cemetery near Bruce.

Mr. McDaniel died at 4:30 a.m. Monday March 6 at his home. He was born in Bruce, Moultrie Co. Sept. 9, 1897, a son of George Riley and Mary Ellen Simmons McDaniel. He married Gertie May Miller Jan. 30, 1919 in Charleston. He was a retired carpenter.

Survivors are his wife, two sons, Eugene of Bruce and Gerald of Mattoon, 8 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren.

MARCELLA MAY MCGEE

The body of Marcella May McGee of Fairmont City was brought here Saturday night to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Sickafus. She had been ill a few days before her death. The body was accompanied here by her father and two sons, Edward Sickafus and family of St. Louis, Missouri, and Arthur McGee of Marissa. Her mother, who is ill, was not able to attend the funeral services.

Marcella May, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth McGee of Fairmont City was born January 8, 1936 and departed from this life June 19, 1936.

Besides her parents, she leaves to mourn her departure two brothers, Kenneth Merwin Jr., and Robert Henry; four grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Sickafus of Bethany and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur McGee of Marissa; two great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. George Travis of Bethany and a host of relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at the Oak Grove church near Dunn Station by Rev. L.E. Mathews, assisted by Rev. E.E. Blankenship of Decatur.

A quartette, composed of Mrs. M.C. Guner, Mrs. Bruce Standerfer, Lester Baker and Roy Wren, sang "Jewels", "Jesus Loves Me" and "In the Garden" accompanied on the piano by Geraldine Baker.

The floral offering was in charge of Doris Milsap, Barbara Jean Queen, Opal Monroe, Mary Milsap, Gladys Queen and Ruth Meyer.

The casket bearers were Don McGee, Robert Evans, Ray McGee and Richard Sharp.

Interment was in Oak Grove cemetery.

BETHANY ECHO - December 31, 1959

Waldo McGee, 57, was fatally injured December 23, when he stepped in front of an auto at Sebring, Florida. The accident happened near a new motel which Mr. McGee was helping to construct. He was employed as a carpenter.

He was a member of the Bethany Cumberland Presbyterian church.

Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.W. McGee of Bethany; five sons, Don and Ray McGee of Sebring, Sam McGee of Miami, Dan McGee of Houma, Louisiana and Johnnie McGee of Warwick, George; a daughter, Mrs. Allen Collier of Sebring; a brother, Henry McGee of Hopewell, Virginia; three sisters, Mrs. Boyd Queen of Decatur, Illinois, Mrs. Gladys Queen and Mrs. Mary Milsap of Bethany; also fifteen grandchildren.

Services were held at Sebring, with burial there.

MRS. McGOWAN ILL FOR MANY MONTHS

Woman, Loved By Many, Dies in Home

Mrs. Elizabeth McGowan, wife of Thomas McGowan, died at 4:30 o’clock Monday afternoon died in the family residence, 525 North Franklin Street. She was 50 years old last December. Her death was caused by cancer of the stomach. She had been in failing health for some time, and during the last nine weeks had been confined to her bed. Mrs. McGowan knew that the end was near and she knew that the fact was known to her family, but she tried to keep them from knowing how she suffered and she was cheerful and patient through it all. She possessed a cheerful disposition and was never happier than when doing something for others and she was loved by all that knew her.

Mrs. McGowan’s maiden name was Elizabeth A. Dunn. She was born near Warrensburg December 8, 1868. The family moved to near Dalton City when she was a little girl and she lived there until she was grown. For a number of years she was a school teacher and the friendships she made among her pupils endured all through life. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and one of the most popular women among the congregation. She and Thomas McGowan were married October 10, 1892 and they have made their home in Decatur.

Mrs. McGowan leaves her husband and the following children: Mrs. Irvin Vollmer of Dalton City, Miss Mary McGowan, Miss Nellie McGowan, Edwin McGowan, Emmett McGowan, Virgil McGowan and Miss Elizabeth McGowan all of Decatur. She also leaves a brother John Dunn of Dalton City, and the following sisters: Mrs. Anna Heneberry of Dalton City, Mrs. Minnie Nolan of Las Vegas, N.M., and Mrs. Nellie McCarty of Haskell, Okla.

The funeral will be held at 9 o’clock Wednesday morning in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. The services will be conducted by Rev. Father J. Murphy. Burial will be in Calvary.

Mrs. Thomas McGowan

The funeral of Mrs. Thomas McGowan was held at 9 o’clock Wednesday morning in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. There was a large attendance, the church being filled with friends. More than fifty automobiles were in the cortege. Solemn high mass was celebrated by Rev. Father J. Murphy as celebrant, Rev. Father Curran of Dalton City as deacon, and Rev. Father Cowden as sub-deacon.

Music was furnished by the regular choir of the church and there was also a solo by Miss Margaret Delaney. There were many beautiful floral tributes in charge of Miss Loretta Malefant, Miss Ellen O’Heran, Miss Geneva Mooney, Miss Helen Henneberry, Miss Bessie Henneberry, Miss Louise Vollmer, Miss Erma Dunn and Miss Imelda Dunn.

The bearers were Joseph Connaghan, P. W. Finn, Dan Higgins, P. J. McGuire, John Fitzgerald and George Goodman. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery.

ELIZA JANE McKOWN DIED SUNDAY AT HOME OF DAUGHTER HERE (Sullivan)

Mrs. Eliza Jane McKown, widow of Samuel McKown, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Flora Jeffers in this city Saturday morning. She had observed her 85th birthday anniversary last May 11.

Her maiden name was Eliza Jane PASCO and she was born May 11, 1844. She was twice married. Her first husband was Annias (sic) Reedy to whom she was united September 1865. He died December 23, 1897. To this union nine children were born, all of whom survive. They are Sam Reedy, Jesse A. Reedy, Bert Reedy, Ed Reedy and Mrs. Flora Jeffers, of Sullivan; Mrs. Hulda Earp of Albany Oregon; Mrs Emma Pritz of Sibley, Ill., Amos Reedy of Findlay and W.H. Reedy of Villa Grove. She also leaves her sister Mrs. Alice Lape of Laredo, MO, and a host of nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Her second marriage was on Jan 15 1902 to Samuel McKown of Kirksville. He preceded her in death on March 18th of the present year.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Kirksville church in charge of Rev. C.E. Barnett of the local Christian Church. Interment was in Camfield Cemetery.

Services for South Bend Man Friday

Service will be held tomorrow (Friday) afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the chapel of the South Bend Mortuary, for Charles S. Millsap, 74, who died at the hospital here Tuesday following a brief illness.

The Rev. Harry E. Gardner, Raymond, will officiate and burial will follow in Fern Hill cemetery.

Born in Tuscolla (Tuscola), Ill., on September 17, 1876, Millsap was married to Lilly A. Williams in Findley, Ill., in 1897 and the couple moved to South Dakota where they farmed until they retired and came to South Bend about 11 years ago.

Surviving are his wife, three sons, Harley G., Raymond; Oral R., Monroe, and Charles L. of Pana, Ill.; two daughters, Mrs. Flossie Gerdes, Miller, S.Dak., and Mrs. Gertrude Thompson, Hoquiam; 11 grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.

Lillie Millsap, 84, Succumbs

Mrs. Lillie Ann Millsap, 84, a South Bend resident of many years, died Saturday at Hillcrest Center following a period of declining health. Mrs. Millsap was born 22 May 1881 in Indiana. She was the widow of Charles Millsap, who died in 1951. Surviving are two daughters: Mrs. Flossie Gerdes of Miller, S.D. and Mrs. Gertrude Thompson of Hoquiam; three sons: Harley Millsap of Renton, Leo Millsap of Ramsey, Ill, and Oral Millsap of Raymond; eleven grandchildren and several great grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted at 11a.m. Tuesday at the Murphy Mortuary Chapel with the Reverend John A. Larsson, Methodist minister, officiating.

Burial followed beside her husband at Fern Hill Cemetery.

RECKLESS DRIVER FINED $150--Accident Cost the Life of Malden Resident.  Colfax, Wash. Sept 25--

Joe Weir pleaded guilty to a charge of dangerously driving an automobile in the superior court today and was sentenced to pay a fine of $150 and costs.  Weir was driving an automobile near Malden September 10, when an accident happened which cost the life of Wilson Moreland of Malden.  The information set forth that the accident was caused by reckless driving.  Weir stated in court that he was intoxicated when it happened.

This above incident was also recorded in the Wilbur Register on Oct 9, 1914.  Wilbur is a small farming town located about 60 miles west of Spokane, WA.

Bunn H. Murphy, 74 died in St. Mary's Hospital in Decatur. Burial was in Kellar Cemetery. He was born on January 17, 1891. He was a resident of Sullivan for 32 years. He leaves two sons, Gerald W. of Decatur, Bunny M. Chestnut, a daughter, Mrs. Hervert Watts of Victoria KS, his mother, Mrs. Anna Murphy of Lovington, two sisters, Mrs. Hazel Shroyer of Lovington, Mrs. Will Johnston of Cerro Gordo, ten grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Henry J. Naab, 84, died in the Shelby County Memorial Hospital. He was born October 11, 1871 in Shunway IL, a son of Jacob and Sophia Schenck Naab. He was a farmer and spent most of his life in this community (Sullivan). He was a member of the Lutheran Church. He was married on Dec. 16, 1897 to Etha Osborne in Fountain Co. IN. Born to this union were four children. His wife preceded him in death on April 4, 1949. He leaves one son, Floyd, three grandchildren, Roger, Susie and Carolyn, three brothers, Adam of Markle IN, Peter of Lerna IL and Albert of Charleston, and one sister Mrs. Martha Richter of Lerna IL.

Services were held at Lovins Funeral Home in Windsor. Joe Veach and Leo Bennett sang, with Mrs. Leo Bennett at the piano. Burial was in Graham Chapel Cemetery near Allenville. Pall bearers were Irwin Richter, Edward Richter, William Richter, Harold Naab, and Charles Jordan. (May 26, 1955)

NEALE, Lida Ann

Mrs. Lida Ann Neale, 96 of Ault, Colorado died at Eventide in Greely Colorado on Thursday, January 26, 1977. She had been a resident there since she was 93 years of age. She was born in Offerle Kansas on May 10, 1881.

She moved to Illinois when she was 9 years of age, in March 1904. She married to Thomas Y. Neal of Windsor, and he died May 1947. In 1920 they moved from Illinois to Ault, where he opened and operated a shoe repair shop.

She was a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Sullivan and a member of the Christian Church in Windsor.

She leaves 2 daughters, Mrs. Helen Fletcher, of Pierce, Colorado, Mrs. Alma Martinusssen of Ault, Colorado, a son Tom Neal of Cheyenne, Wyoming, 4 grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren. A son Lawerence Neal died August 28, 1936. Services for Mrs. Neal were held Monday, January 30 in the Macy Alnutt Drawing Room, with interrment in Linn Grove Cemetery, Greely, Colorado.

DORA PIFER DIED SUNDAY EVENING

Mrs. Dora Arbelle Pifer, widow of the late John E. Pifer, died at the home of her son Roy near Decatur Sunday afternoon. She had been in failing health for some time and was taken to her son's home a few weeks ago. Her maiden name was Winchester and she was born in Clay county, March 16, 1866. She was united in marriage to John E. Pifer on March 2, 1887. Mr. Pifer preceded her in death August 31, 1931.

Mr. and Mrs. Pifer were the parents of four children all of whom survive. They are Rioy Pifer of Decatur; Ralph Pifer of Perkins, Missouri; Nina Hall of Elkhart, Indiana and Iva Gramblin of Garden Grove, Iowa. Two of her brothers preceded her in death. The following brothers and sister survive: William Winchester of Bruce; Verlie Winchester and Henry Winchester of Allenville; Charles Winchester and Mrs. Maggie Moss of Sullivan. She also leaves 13 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Methodist church with the Rev. Paul M. Curry in charge. Interment was in Greenhill cemetery.

PIFER, Roy E.

Roy E. Pifer, 71 of Oakley, died at 2:45 a.m. Friday.

Mr. Pifer, an employee of the Wabash Railroad, was a former resident of Sullivan.

He was born April 30, 1889, in Moultrie County, a son of John and Dora Pifer.

He leaves his wife, Mahala, a son, Guy, Bellwood; daughter Mr. Hazel Poff, Decatur; brother, Ralph, Birch Tree, Mo; sisters, Mrs. Nina Hill, Elkhart, Ind., Mrs. Iva Gramblin, Garden Grove, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday in the McMullin Funeral Home, Sullivan, with burial in Greenhill Cemetery. Friends may call after 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Services Held Sunday For Roy E. Pifer.

Roy E Pifer, former Sullivan resident, died March 17 at 2:34 a.m., in a hospital in Jacksonville. He was born April 30, 1889 in Moultrie county, but had lived in Oakley for a number of years.

He leave his wife, Mahala, of Oakley; son Guy Pifer, of Belwood; a daughter Hazel Poff, of Decatur; a brother Ralph Pifer of Birch Tree, Mo., and two sisters, Mrs. Nina Hill of Elkhart, Indiana, and Mrs. Iva Gramblin of Garden Grove, Iowa. Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the McMullin Funeral Home, with Harold Harsh in charge.

Burial was in Greenhill cemetery. Pall bearers were Cleo Spaugh, Oral Dolan, Jim Pifer, Ralph Harris, Lloyd Winchester, and Norman Burwell.

Funeral Friday For Mrs. Pifer

Mrs. Mahala J. Pifer, 70, of Decatur, died at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 11 at St. Mary's Hopital. Mrs. Pifer was born Jan. 14, 1895 in Moultrie County, the daughter of Charles and Dilsa Bonham Ballinger. She has resided in the Decatur area for a number of year. She was the widow of Roy E. Pifer who preceded her in death March 17, 1961.

Survivors include one son, Guy of Stone Park; one daughter, Mrs. Hazel P. Off of Decatur; two brothers John Ballinger of Cerro Gordo and Bill Ballinger of Illiopolis; two sisters, Mr. Zelma Vandeveer of Sullivan and Mrs. Della Sager of Chicago; nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. at McMullin Funeral Home in Sullivan. The Rev. C. A. Longton will officiate and burial will be in Greenhill Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 4 p.m. today (Thursday)

QUEEN, Harold L.

Harold L. Queen of Bethany died Oct. 8, 1980 in St. Marys Hospital in Decatur. Funeral services were held at the First Christian Church of Bethany. Burial was in Bethany Cemetery. Mr. Queen was born in Bethany, the son of A.Cl and Minnie Queen. A retired farmer, he married Lois Sharp in 1920.

Surviving are his wife, a son William of Washington, IL, two brothers, George of Bethany, and Marvin of Decatur, two sisters, Velma Standerfer of Bartonville, and Eva Baughn of Sullivan, 5 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Four brothers preceded him in death.

RAUCH, Herman

Herman Rauch of Strasburg passed away Feb. 12, 1964. Services were held at the Methodist Church at Strasburg and interment was in the Liberty Cemetery near Bruce. He was born January 27, 1889, a son of Herman Sr. and Karoline Wiseman Rauch. On January 20, 1920 he married to Tella Briscoe. They farmed in Moultrie Co. and later moved near Strasburg. He retired in 1953 and they moved to Strasburg. He leaves his wife, a son Paul of Stewardson, a brother Julius of Sullivan, two sisters and 5 grandchildren.

Mrs. Levada Rowena Ray, 64 of Dayton, TX, formerly of Decatur, died in Baptist Hospital at Beaumont TX. Burial was in Magnolia Park Cemetery in Dayton. She married Otto Ray, and he died in 1969.

She leaves a daughter, Mrs. Thelma Dale of Dayton, TX, a sister, Mrs. Olive Meredith of Decatur, a brother, Harley Cox of Oakley, 5 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by 3 brothers and one sister.

George F. Reed, 75 of Bethany died. He was born in Shelby County and married Mamie Foster on Nov. 23, 1936. She died in 1966. He leaves one son, Keith of Findlay, stepsons, Carl Stevens of Kansas City MO, and Melvin Stevens of Kansas City KS, stepdaughter, Madine Burton of Kansas City MO, sisters Mrs. W.T. Smith of Morrisonville, Mrs. Virgil Ferguson of Dalton City, 12 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

REED, Harry R.

Harry R. Reed died Sunday night at his home in Bruce at the age of 78 years, 3 months and 6 days. Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon at the Methodist Church of Bruce and were conducted by Rev. Webb. Interment was in the Windsor Cemetery.

Mr. Reed had been sick for some time and for the last few weeks his daughter, Mrs. Winchester and her husband helped to care for him. He had made his home with his grandson Clyde Reed. Harry Randolph Reed was born Jan. 6, 1859, to Joseph and Sarah Reed, near Sunnit, which is now Gays. All of his life was spent in Shelby and Moultrie Counties. In early life he united with the Baptist Church at Strasburg.

On April 27, 1882 Mr. Reed was united in marriage with Luella Hughes, who died on Oct. 12, 1934. To this union nine children were born, three of whom passed away in infancy, and James in early life. Those surviving are Mrs. Edna Winchester of Bruce, Anna Reed of Decatur, Mrs. Alta Miner of Windsor, John of East Whitley, and Ray of Bruce. There are eleven grandchildren.

Mr. Reed was the oldest of five brothers, one of whom preceded him in death, as did five sisters. Surviving are three brothers, Tom of Bethany, Willie and John of Goodland Kansas and a sister, Clarinda Edwards of Sherman County Kansas.

REED, Thomas

Thomas Reed, a resident of this community for about fifty years passed away in his home in Bethany. (Feb. 17, 1951) He had been ill with the flu, but was getting along nicely, but became suddenly ill about five o'clock in the morning, and died within a very short time.

Mr. Reed, son of Joseph and Sarah Elizabeth Munson Reed, was born near Bruce on Apr. 26, 1871. When a young man, he homesteaded in the state of Kansas, near where the city of Goodland is now located. There he was united in marriaage to Miss Minnie Galloup on Sept. 1, 1896. Shortly after their marriage the Reeds returned to Illinois, the trip back was made in a covered wagon and required 47 days. They often referred to the experiences, some humorous, others serious, and many heart breaking, that they encountered on their journey. Back in Illinois they lived in Cowden for three years, then moved to the Bethany community where they lived the rest of their lives. For a number of years they lived in the Prairie Home Community on one of the Sanner farms, then moved to a farm south of Bethany where they lived before retiring from farming. A few years ago they retired and moved to property in Bethany. Mrs. Reed preceded her husband in death, passing away on May 29, 1931.

Mr. Reed united with the Prairie Home Presbyterian Church many years ago and kept his membership there until his death. He was a member of the Odd Fellow Lodge for 41 years and a member of the Rebeccahs for several years.

He leaves two daughters, Mrs. W.T. Smith (Sarah) of Morrisonville and Mrs. Mildred Ferguson of Bethany, one son George also of Bethany, and one brother, John of Goodland Kansas. Also left are seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon in the Tohill Memorial Home with Rev. C.E. Stabler in charge.

Mrs. Russell Keown and Mrs. Francis Hogg sang, accompanied by Miss Virginia Ekiss. The pall bearers were members of the local Odd Fellows Lodge. Interment was in the Bethany Cemetery, under the direction of the Tohill Funeral Service with the Odd Fellows having charge of the grave services.

REYNOLDS, Mrs. Berniece

Funeral services for Mrs. Berniece Reynolds, 64, of Sullivan were held at 1:30 Wed. in the McMullin Funeral Home in Sullivan. Burial was in Greenhill Cemetery. Mrs. Reynolds died Monday, Jan. 21 at Sherbyville Restorium.

She was born in McLeansboro on Mar. 3, 1909, the daughter of Warner and Clara Reeder Malone. She married Luther Reynolds on Apr. 27, 1930 in Sullivan. She was a member of the Sullivan Church of Christ.

She leaves her husband, three sons, Carvell of Elkhart, IN, Donald of Shelbyville, and Melvin of Allenville, a daughter, Maxine Henwood of Sullivan, two brothers, Ray Malone of Sullivan, and Williard of New Jersey, and 12 grandchildren. One brother preceded her in death.

RHODES, Luella

Mrs. William (Luella) Rhodes, 68, died at East View Manor in Sullivan on Aug. 8, 1969. She was born Jan. 20, 1885 in Moultrie County, a daughter of William and Mary Gough Cazier. She married James W. Rhodes, who died April 1935. She leaves sons Clive, Lewisville KY, William, Columbus OH, Thoedore, Bloomington IN, Noel, Tuscon AZ, Wison of Oreana, and James of Sullivan, daughters, Mrs. Mary Islakar, Sullivan, Mrs. Mildred Davis and Mrs. Pearl Lee, both of Lovington.
