Notes on the program:

  • "Titania" was composed by Louis James Alfred Lefébure-Wély, whose biography reveals him to be a more respectable musician than I would have expected. The sheet music for Titania is available here.

  • "Mrs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch" is the story of a poor but plucky widow and her large brood who face life's challenges with humor and grace. A 1934 film based on the story was released, starring Pauline Lord, W.C. Fields, and Zazu Pitts.

The entire novel is available here, though, of course, we know nothing of which excepts were recited.

  • "The Mission of the Ango-Saxon" may the piece by Professor O.B. Super, Ph.D., published in the December, 1890 edition of the Methodist Review.

  • "Eau Riante", or Laughing Water, (misspelled in the program as "Ean Riante) was composed by Claudine M. Millington. The sheet music is available here.

  • Information about the Marechal Niel Rose is available here.
