Postmark: Sullivan Nov. 1 9PM Addressed to: Miss Ethel Burtner Broadlands Ills. c/o T.V. Davis R. R. 36 Message: At Sullivan to football game Newman 25 to 0. Yours J.H.C. Ethel was born about 1891, the daughter of William and Ella Burtner. The sender is presumably from the same community, but has not been identified. Pifer's park was located between Sullivan and Allenville. Though I haven't determined the exact location, it may have been on Daniel M. Pifer's land, section 8, East Nelson, 3/4 mile south of the Masonic Home. Like Wyman Park, it was a popular site for picnics and concerts; unlike Wyman however, it also provided cabins for extended vacations. |

Postmark: Sullivan asdfasdfasdfApril (rest of date illegible) Addressed to: Goldie Shipman 1064 Franklin St. Decatur Illinois Message: Hope you many happy birthdays from your grandma The 1920 census confirms the Shipmans' Decatur address and indicates that Goldie was born about May, 1916, the daughter of Ray and Allie Shipman. Therefore, while the postmark year is not legible, this would probably have been mailed in the 1920's. The bandstand stood near the entrance to the park, and was demolished in the early 1960's to make way for the Civic Center. |

Postmark: Sullivan Ill. ??? 1930 1 PM Addressed to: Miss Mary K. Miller Valley Station Kentucky. Rout 1 Box 298 Message: 2110 Jackson St. Sullivan Ill. Dear Mary K - I hope you are enjoying yourself as much as I am. I play golf - fish - go to shows etc. I won the ladies golf prize yesterday. It was a round free today none of the good players were out -- was the reason. See you 1st Tues in Aug. Mrs. Wimp Census records provide three possibilities for Mrs. Wimp, and six for Mary Miller; consequently, their identities are undetermined. |

Though undated, the style of the postcard indicates that this is an early view, showing the park as it originally looked. I have been unable to identify the sender. Sure is warm here - thought it might rain but not yet. Be good & help Barb & mind your manners. Will write more later Love to all M??mie Earl Chalmers Mortimore (b. c. 1917) was the son of Charles Ovid and Nora Agnes (Baucknecht) Mortimore. The sender's signature is unclear, as it's overlayed with the postmark, but appears to be M??mie, where the question marks are ambiguous letters. |
